CLEVELAND CAVALIERS RUMOR MILL
UPDATED SEPTEMBER 7TH
--The Cavaliers have reached back to their glory days, and fans can't be happier about it. They unveiled their new uniforms for the 2010-11 season on Aug. 17 in downtown Cleveland. The invitation-only crowd was the first (other than those who saw them leaked to the NBA Store earlier in the day) to see the "original expression" of wine-and-gold home and road adidas uniforms that reflect the colors and style elements from the earliest years of the franchise.
"What really ended up happening was the fans loved the original colors of this team," Cavs marketing director Tracy Marek said. "That's what people are connected to and what they want."
The fans got a portion of what they wanted in 2003 when the Cavs came out with the "new expression" of wine and gold. They have now taken it a step further and have gone back to the original wine and gold colors.
"Basically, we took the colors that are part of the heritage of this team -- what people are very strongly connected to -- and made a modest update," Marek said.
The front of the white home jersey displays "Cavaliers" in wine coloring across the chest. The front of the wine road jersey boasts "Cleveland" in white. The team will debut the uniforms in the preseason opener against the Charlotte Bobcats on Oct. 5 at Quicken Loans Arena.
--Some have described him as a national treasure. Joe Tait, the Cavaliers' play-by-play radio announcer for 38 years, received the 2010 Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Aug. 12 in Springfield, Mass. Hugely popular among the masses, the 73-year-old is entering his final season with the Cavs.
Tait almost certainly will never get to call an NBA championship team in his career. After the 2010-11 season, he's walking away from the NBA and will retire to his home in rural Ohio.
"(The Cavs) called me this morning and asked me if I would consider doing just the home games (beyond this year)," Tait said. "I told them no. This was it. Game, set, match. I've had enough. It's become harder each year to perform the duties that I require of myself. I'm not going to sit around and become a cartoon character of what I used to be. I've seen that happen with other guys who stayed far too long, and the last 10 years or so it was a joke. I'm not going to go that route."
He might make a few recommendations for his replacement. The team is already getting demo tapes and resumes for Tait's position.
